Guidelines for Safely Operating Photovoltaic Pumps

Photovoltaic pumps are commonly used in remote areas where reliability is paramount. Ensuring their proper installation and operation is essential for their longevity and efficient performance. This article outlines key precautions to consider when using photovoltaic pumps.

1. Prevent Dry Running

During the initial setup, it’s crucial to limit the dry running time of the photovoltaic water pump to no more than 90 seconds. Prolonged dry running can lead to excessive motor temperatures and damage. To safeguard the motor, modern photovoltaic water pumps include solar controllers that can promptly cut off power when water levels drop too low, preventing dry running.

2. Anti-Freeze Measures for Water Pipes

In regions with extremely low temperatures, take precautions to prevent freezing of water pipes. Burial of water pipes approximately 10cm below the frost line is recommended to avoid exposure to freezing air, which can cause pipe damage. After the photovoltaic water pump completes its operation, promptly drain the pipeline using one of the following methods:

  • Manual Valves: Install manual valves and schedule regular drainage by maintenance personnel.
  • Pressure Relief Valves: Install pressure relief valves and set them to open automatically when the water pressure exceeds a specific threshold, allowing water to drain.
  • Drainage Holes: Drill small holes in non-frozen areas of the pipeline, allowing excess water to discharge when the system is shut down. Ensure these holes are located downstream of one-way valves.

3. Waterproof Cable Connections

Photovoltaic pump motor cables are typically short, necessitating cable connections during installation. Given the possibility of cable joints being submerged, ensuring waterproof sealing is critical. To achieve this, professional cable joints and plastic pipes are often used for cable connections. In some cases, particularly where stringent requirements apply, specialized photovoltaic water pump junction boxes may be necessary for cable connections.

4. Sand Control

Solid particles like sand or stones can inflict substantial damage on photovoltaic pumps, significantly reducing their lifespan. To prevent the ingestion of sand particles, consider installing a sand filter at the pump inlet, especially when the water source contains a high sand content. The use of filters is essential for maintaining pump efficiency and longevity in such conditions.

By following these precautions for the proper use and maintenance of photovoltaic pumps, you can ensure their reliability, durability, and efficiency, even in challenging environmental conditions.
